So I just scored this amazing little gem. It’s a vintage, no longer produced OS/Graupner Wankel. 4.9cc, single rotor, about 4.9 HP (!).
I’d eventually like to build a display/test stand, but in the meantime I’ll need to keep it healthy.
It has great compression and I do have the muffler though it’s not pictured here.
Can anyone with nitro RC plane experience give me some tips on how to maintain it while static? Is there a certain type of oil I can inject into the ports? How do I maintain apex seal health? Is it safe to turn over by hand from time to time?
Thanks in advance.

They almost look like they’re supposed to fit together.
Meta wankel.

That’s kind of cool

That’s really inefficient, I have a 3.44cc piston engine putting out somewhere around 2.5-3hp in my buggy.
Pack it in after-run oil, that’s how most Nitro engines are stored. Though I’m not sure if it would have apex seals, not too up on my OS Wankel engines so really don’t know on that.

Shoot some WD-40 in it and turn it over several times and you’ll be good to go! Very cool score
EDIT: spray it into the carb, if you didn’t know

don’t know much about the airplane side of the hobby but i found this neat manual

Oops. Quoted wrong source. 4.9 HP.
They all have apex seals. Thanks for the suggestion.

That 2.5-3 hp is probably very optimistic...

Great, thanks! Ordered some after run oil as suggested elsewhere and in the manual.

4.9cc, single rotor, about 4.9 HP (!).
Lots of !s. 1,000 bhp/litre!

Ah, that number sounds better.
And on the after-run oil, put a few drops down both the throttle body and exhaust port, then turn the engine over a few times, if you want do it a couple times with the crank at different spots just to make sure the rotor gets totally covered. Don’t worry abut putting too much oil in the engine, any excess will come out as the rotor spins.

Not really, the higher-end engines by OS, Novarossi, and a number of others have quite a bit of power to them. And remember that RC Nitro engines run between 20% and 30% Nitromethane, they have a bit of power to them.

Thanks again. Is clockwise (with crank/front of the motor facing you) the correct rotation normally?

I have no idea for airplanes, in my buggy the engine rotates Counter-Clockwise using the same orientation. Did it come with a manual? Again I don’t know much about airplane engines, but it might say in there.

oh apex seal I read it as “maintain sex appeal health” and was looking forward to the responses.
